Dental ExamIf you're intentional about maintaining your dental health, then it's crucial that you come in for regular dental checkups. A trained dentist can provide a much higher level of treatment than you can on your own. Regular CheckupsWaiting too long between checkups can cause oral health problems to worsen. Bacteria in our mouths create acidic conditions that weaken tooth enamel. If this goes unchecked, the bacteria will form a cavity that can penetrate all the way into the dentin, pulp, or even the nerve and root of the tooth. Plaque buildup will accelerate this process. Unless you possess the equipment and knowledge to detect these problems and treat them yourself, then it's recommended that you come in for a checkup at least once every six months. This will allow us to stay on top of your oral health and track any potential tooth problems that may develop. Dental HygienistA dental hygienist works together with the dentist to give patients preventative oral care. They perform tasks such as cleaning teeth, removing plaque, tartar, and stains, and taking X-rays. Dental hygienists also look for signs of damage or oral disease, providing advice to patients on how they can take better care of their teeth, and documenting patients' dental health. Dental hygienists can perform some of these tasks independently, but they'll need the dentist's supervision for others. Teeth CleaningA teeth cleaning is preceded by a physical exam, in which a dental hygienist will check for any signs of gingivitis (inflamed gums) or potential tooth problems. Next, we will use a scaler to remove any plaque near your gum line and between your teeth. Once the plaque is gone, we will use a high-powered electric brush to deep clean your teeth, followed by an expert flossing. The cleaning concludes with a rinse and possibly a fluoride treatment. Dental ExamDuring a dental exam, Dr. Kathiravan Mohan will go over your entire medical history to see if you have any conditions that might complicate either your oral health or any potential treatments we might need to perform. The dentist will also check your mouth and facial area for any potential oral health problems, such as damaged or decayed teeth, gum inflammation, and warning signs of cavities or oral cancer, among other things. The sooner we catch potential health problems, the sooner we can treat them. X-RayDental X-rays are usually only done once a year. If you have a dental issue that needs regular examination, then we may need to do X-rays more frequently. Some people avoid having X-rays done because they are concerned about radiation. But the reality is that the exposure levels are so low that they're generally considered safe for adults and children. There are some exceptions, however. For instance, pregnant women should avoid any type of X-rays, as the radiation is not considered safe for developing babies. We also place a lead covering over your chest and abdomen to protect your vital organs from any unnecessary exposure. |
